Massachusetts Trooper Charged After Entering Ex-Girlfriend’s Apartment
A Massachusetts state trooper was arrested after his former girlfriend found him asleep in her Boston apartment, where he allegedly entered by climbing a fire escape. Michael E. McGuire, 37, faces a charge of nighttime breaking and entering. The woman told police they had ended their relationship about a month earlier but met at a South End bar on Halloween night. She said she asked him to leave around 10:30 p.m. because he was heavily intoxicated.
When she returned around 1:30 a.m. on November 1, she found McGuire in her bed. She and her roommate called police and went outside. The roommate told officers McGuire said he had climbed the fire escape. Police noted a small cut on his forehead and said he appeared unsteady. McGuire claimed the woman had struck him, but said he did not want her to get in trouble. She told police he did not have a key to the apartment.
A police supervisor ordered McGuire’s arrest after learning he was a state trooper. State Police suspended him, saying the alleged conduct was concerning and did not meet the department’s professionalism standards. At his court appearance on November 2, his lawyer invoked the BRAVE Act, which can pause criminal proceedings while a service member seeks specialized treatment.
McGuire was assigned to the State Police detective unit at the Suffolk district attorney’s office. In June, he was knocked unconscious in a Quincy bar after fellow trooper Christopher Regan punched him. Regan has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge and also invoked the BRAVE Act. Both men were assigned to the unit when they were separately arrested.
