Hugh Jackman and X-Men Co-Stars Honor Patrick Stewart

Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, aged 86, after what his longtime spokesperson described as a brief period living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His family and friends were with him, the spokesperson said, and the actor was surrounded by music, prayer, tears and laughter.

Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine alongside Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier in several X-Men films, remembered him in an Instagram post. “I learned so much from him,” Jackman wrote, calling Stewart a close friend and saying he would miss him. The two appeared together in films including X-Men, X-Men: The Last Stand and Logan.

Co-star Rebecca Romijn, who played Mystique, recalled Stewart’s humor and his commanding voice, and sent condolences to his family. Famke Janssen, who portrayed Jean Grey, said she had worked with him over several decades and called him one of the greats.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige praised Stewart’s talent, generosity and mentorship, while William Shatner, his Star Trek colleague, remembered the intelligence and humanity he brought to his work. Stewart is set to appear as Xavier in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, due in December, alongside several of his former X-Men castmates.
