NYPD Plans Extensive Security for New York City Marathon

The 50th New York City Marathon is set for November 1, with runners covering 26.2 miles, starting on Staten Island and crossing all five boroughs before reaching Central Park. More than 60,000 runners and about 2.5 million spectators are expected, officials said.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department has spent months preparing with New York Road Runners and other agencies. She said officials know of no specific, credible threat to the race, but thousands of officers will be positioned along the course.

Specialized teams, including canine, mounted, harbor, aviation and bomb-squad units, will support the operation. Police will use helicopters and drones to monitor the event, while intelligence teams track potential threats. Hundreds of vehicles and more than 10,000 metal barricades will help limit access to the route.

Bags may be inspected in designated Central Park viewing areas. Coolers, oversized bags, chairs, umbrellas, weapons and unauthorized drones are prohibited. Tisch urged spectators to stay alert and report concerns.

Street and bridge closures will affect travel early on race day. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge's upper deck is scheduled to close at 11 p.m. on October 31, followed by its lower level at 7 a.m. on November 1. Other bridges will close during the morning and reopen after runners pass. Officials encouraged people to use public transit.
