Camerimage Opens With Silence for Kraków Victims
The festival’s opening ceremony at Toruń’s Jordanki Culture Centre began with a tribute to those killed in a shooting in Kraków earlier on November 7. A gunman drove into Kraków’s historic Main Market Square and fired, leaving at least six dead and more than twelve injured. Prime Minister Donald Tusk added that investigators had discovered three more bodies in the alleged attacker’s residence. The suspect was believed to have far-right ties, and the attack was described as Poland’s most lethal shooting in decades. Before the program began, local politicians set to address the gathering recognized the deaths.
Artificial intelligence was a central theme during the three-hour ceremony. A humanoid robot named Edward Warchocki joined festival director Marek Żydowicz onstage for a discussion of the technology’s “hopes and threats,” which Żydowicz said would be examined throughout the seven-day festival. In video messages, filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Francis Ford Coppola, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Christopher Nolan also discussed AI in entertainment.
Darren Aronofsky, an advocate for generative AI in filmmaking who launched the studio Primordial Soup last year, received the festival’s honorary Award for Director. He said he valued Camerimage’s recognition of the many people involved in making films.
Karolina Gruszka received the Kujawy Pomorze Region Marshal’s Film Award and praised the late David Lynch, whose Inland Empire she appeared in. Cinematographer Janusz Kamiński received The Hollywood Reporter’s Visionary Award. The festival also honored Polish director Andrzej Wajda, marking 100 years since his birth and 10 since his death.
Guadagnino and cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed introduced Artificial, about OpenAI’s origins, with Andrew Garfield playing Sam Altman and Yura Borisov portraying Ilya Sutskever. Guadagnino said the film focused on the power and narcissism of technology leaders and was grounded in facts. Neon plans to release it in the United States on December 25 and the United Kingdom on January 22, 2027. Camerimage runs through November 14.
