Utah State Seeks Offensive Breakthrough Against Fresno State
Utah State (3-5, 2-2) meets Fresno State (5-3, 3-1) at 7:30 p.m. MST on November 7 at Maverik Stadium. The game will air on USA Sports, with radio coverage on the Aggie Sports Network, including KZNS 1280 The Zone. Fresno State leads their series 19-14 across 34 meetings, but Utah State won last year’s game 28-17.
The Aggies enter after beating Colorado State 31-14, their highest-scoring outing of the season. Quarterback McCae Hillstead completed 77% of his passes for 173 yards in his first start since the season opener, added 79 rushing yards and had a 44-yard reception on a trick play. He did not turn the ball over. Colorado State has one of the nation’s weakest defenses, leaving Utah State’s performance against Fresno State a stronger test of whether the offense has progressed.
Fresno State rebounded from losses to Boise State and San Diego State with a 38-22 win over Oregon State. The Bulldogs’ defense allows an average of 21 points per game and has recorded seven interceptions, recovered seven fumbles and made 20 sacks. Utah State has given up 23 sacks, making protection and ball security key concerns.
Utah State coach Bronco Mendenhall said he sees improvement and momentum in his team. Fresno State coach Matt Entz described the matchup as a significant challenge, pointing to Utah State’s physical defense and coaching. The Aggies visit San Diego State on November 14; Fresno State travels to Texas State that day.
