Jet Fuel Spill Sends Cleanup Crews to Upper Merion Quarry
The pipeline was struck at about 2:45 p.m. on November 5 as a utility crew worked near River Road and Coates Street in the township’s Bridgeport section. Fuel flowed underground onto property used by an auto auction and into a nearby quarry, most of it away from the Schuylkill River.
Energy Transfer isolated the damaged section and shut down the line. No one was hurt or evacuated. An initial shelter-in-place order was lifted, and roads have reopened. Air monitoring is in place, while recovery crews began a fuller cleanup on November 6, expected to take several days.
State and federal environmental agencies, together with Energy Transfer, said there was no immediate public threat and the spill was not expected to affect drinking water. Officials said some fuel had been removed on November 5, with cleanup and restoration continuing at the site.
