Arizona Democrats Win Trifecta After Flipping Seven Senate Seats
Arizona Democrats won seven Republican-held Senate seats in the November 2026 midterm elections, shifting the chamber to a 20-10 Democratic majority. Democrats last controlled the Senate in 1992, and the new majority gives the party a Senate supermajority, as well as control of the state House and governor’s office for the first time in 60 years.
The Senate seats changed hands in districts 2, 4, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 27. The winners are Amelia Gallitano, Aaron Lieberman, Kristie O’Brien, Stephanie Walsh, Elaine Aldrete, Edgar Soto and Kyle Clayton.
Democrats will also lead the House, with 37 representatives to the Republicans’ 20. The combined results give the party control of both legislative chambers and the governor’s office.
Senate Democratic Leader Priya Sundareshan said voters had given Democrats a mandate. She pointed to lowering costs, public education, water security, fundamental rights and stronger communities as priorities for the new majority. The results set the stage for Democrats to pursue those priorities when the new Senate is seated.
