Universal Sets Overseas Dates for Alex Gibney’s Musk Documentary
Universal Pictures International has announced the first overseas cinema dates for Musk, Alex Gibney’s documentary about Elon Musk. The film opens in the U.K. on January 15, followed by Germany on January 21, Spain on February 5, France on February 17 and Australia on February 25. Further dates are expected to be announced. The documentary opened in U.S. theaters through Bleecker Street in October.
The international schedule follows questions about whether the film would receive an overseas release. Gibney had said the studio appeared to waver, and wondered whether the political climate and the film’s subject had played a part. The documentary has also faced legal threats from Musk.
Running three hours and 45 minutes, the film examines Musk’s influence and his shift toward supporting MAGA. It also addresses his Mars ambitions, disputes involving Tesla’s self-driving technology and his relationships with several mothers of his 14 children. It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and has screened in Toronto and London.
Musk has dismissed the documentary as a “hit piece” and attacked Gibney’s integrity. The film’s festival schedule continues later in November, with planned appearances in Lisbon, Amsterdam and Stockholm.
