Pegula’s Hot-Mic Criticism Targets Andreeva’s On-Court Conduct

A microphone captured American tennis player Jessica Pegula criticizing 19-year-old rival Mirra Andreeva during practice at Indian Wells. Pegula said she had lost some respect for Andreeva’s coach, former Spanish player Conchita Martínez, and accused Martínez of encouraging the teenager’s behavior.

Pegula described Andreeva as talented, citing her serve, anticipation and intelligence, but said her attitude held her back. She suggested Andreeva would be a stronger player with the mindset of American Coco Gauff. Pegula’s coach also said Andreeva needed to be put in her place.

The remarks focused on Andreeva’s outbursts during matches. At Wimbledon this year, she smashed rackets, argued with the umpire and her team, and exited the court crying after falling in the second round. She has also broken a racket and exchanged words with spectators at Indian Wells.

Andreeva has said she sometimes finds it helpful to get angry at herself, while also naming Serena Williams’ composure in defeat as something she could learn from. She had not publicly responded to Pegula’s comments. Pegula and Andreeva have not yet played each other in a competitive match, though they could meet at the tournament.

Pegula, 32, reached the 2024 US Open final but has not won a Grand Slam singles title. She is the daughter of billionaire Terry Pegula, who co-owns the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres with his wife, Kim. Jessica Pegula has said she grew up normally and that much of her family’s wealth came later in her life.
