Global Arts Live opens permanent Kendall Square performance center
The 45,000-square-foot center occupies the first three floors of a building developed by BioMed Realty. It gives the Boston-area nonprofit, which has presented performances in venues around the region since 1990, a permanent home for the first time. Pharmaceutical company Takeda will occupy floors above it, and sponsors the center’s theater.
The Platform includes the 125-seat Tempo Stage, designed for cabaret-style performances, and the 404-seat Takeda Theater, as well as a rehearsal studio, dressing rooms, two bars and a cafe. Global Arts Live CEO Connie C. Chin said the shared public lobby is intended as a welcoming gathering place.
The free opening-day event on November 7 runs from noon to 4 p.m. and includes Malian drummer Sidy Maiga, the Balinese ensemble Gamelan Galak Tika and aerial performances by BANDALOOP. The dance company will perform on the building’s exterior at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. That evening, Compagnie Hervé Koubi will present “Sol Invictus” in a ticketed performance.
Global Arts Live plans to stage about 100 nights of programming each year and make roughly 200 more nights available to artists and arts groups at subsidized rates. It will additionally provide 25 complimentary rental nights per year. Founder Maure Aronson said the new stages will add capacity without replacing the venues the nonprofit has previously used.
