Bodycam Shows Response to Deadly Tampa Citibank Shooting

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released edited body-camera footage and 911 audio showing the response to a shooting at the Sabal Center, a Citibank campus in Tampa. A woman died, and five or more people were hurt, authorities said. An armed security guard shot the gunman, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities said the suspect’s vehicle breached a barrier around the Sabal Park office complex, struck an outdoor dining space, and the suspect shot a woman before firing inside the building’s cafeteria. In the footage, deputies ask people for a description of the suspect as they arrive and are told he is inside the cafeteria.

An officer later announces, “Shooter is down.” The video then captures deputies guiding people as they leave the building. The 911 calls capture reports of gunfire and law enforcement coordinating plans to enter.

Dispatchers began receiving calls at 12:11 p.m., and deputies reached the scene in less than a minute, according to the sheriff’s office. The campus had more than 3,200 people at the time, and more than 400 law enforcement personnel responded, including 367 sheriff’s deputies.

Sheriff Chad Chronister credited the on-site security team and deputies with stopping the gunman before he could harm anyone else.
