Ravens Seek an Upset With Fagnano Making His First Start
The Ravens enter their November 5 home game against the Jaguars as major underdogs, with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano set to make his first NFL start. Baltimore is 4-4 and has lost seven of its past 10 home games. Since 2000, it has been a home underdog by at least 10 points three times.
One suggested change is for defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to move away from heavy zone and dime coverage and send more pressure. Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence has completed 69.7% of his passes with a 127.7 rating when not blitzed, compared with 57.6% and an 87.2 rating against blitzes. Baltimore has forced only one second-half turnover this season, tied for the fewest in the league.
On offense, the Ravens are urged to protect Fagnano with a run-focused approach, using extra linemen and blocking tight end Nick Vannett. Jacksonville has defensive-line injuries, and Baltimore should try to control possession rather than rely on the rookie to make repeated drop-back throws. The Ravens have scored just three second-half points across their past three games.
Special teams could also matter, with Jake Moody facing an opportunity to establish himself while Tyler Loop is on injured reserve. Jacksonville comes in after a 42-7 win over Indianapolis and a bye following two weeks in London. The Jaguars could be vulnerable after limited recent exertion and a short week of preparation, but Baltimore will need to strike first to take advantage.
