Bronx Nurse and Federal Agent Boyfriend Found Dead
Cantarini was speaking by phone with her father when Diaz allegedly shot her in the head at their apartment in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, police said. Diaz, 38, worked for Customs and Border Protection at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He was also found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Police are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide linked to a domestic dispute.
Cantarini told her father that Diaz was trying to kill her. Her father called 911 while staying on the phone with her, and said he heard her scream and then heard gunshots. He described the call as lasting about 14 minutes.
Her father said Cantarini had been planning to end the relationship. On the day of the shooting, she had taken the couple’s six-year-old daughter to her parents’ home, then returned to the apartment to collect clothes. Diaz also had a son from an earlier relationship.
Neighbors said they heard a loud argument earlier in the week, and later heard gunshots. Police said they had no prior calls about domestic incidents involving the couple. Neighbors described the family as close and expressed concern for the young girl, who was not at the apartment during the shooting.
Police recovered a gun thought to have been involved in the deaths. The investigation is continuing, and a CBP spokesperson said the agency is cooperating with authorities.
