Christina Hines Flips Michigan House Seat for Democrats
Christina Hines won Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, defeating Republican Michael Bouchard and turning a seat held by Republicans into a Democratic victory. The result came in a closely contested race as both parties competed for control of Congress.
The district had been represented by John James, who left the seat to run for governor. It was considered one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts.
Hines is a former prosecutor and law professor from Macomb County. Michael Bouchard is the son of Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard; he earned a degree from Michigan State University before joining the U.S. Army, where he served with the 82nd and 101st Airborne divisions.
The district encompasses Macomb County communities such as Warren, Sterling Heights and Shelby Township, as well as Rochester and Rochester Hills in Oakland County. Hines’s win gives Democrats a seat that had been held by Republicans, in a contest with wider significance for control of the House.

Republicans Lose James’s Michigan Seat to Democrat Hines
Republicans lost Michigan’s 10th Congressional District when Christina Hines defeated Michael Bouchard, flipping a seat previously held by John James. James left the House seat to run for governor, and the district was one of the nation’s most competitive in the battle for congressional control.
The outcome hands Democrats a district that had been represented by a Republican. That is a consequential gain in a close fight for the House, even as the race was decided locally across parts of Macomb and Oakland counties.
