Livonia Police Use Grappler to End I-275 Pursuit
The pursuit began after a vehicle was involved in a crash and left the scene, Hazel Park police said. Officers pursued the SUV west on I-96 and along I-275 in Livonia. Livonia police joined the pursuit shortly before 6 p.m. on November 2.
A Livonia patrol vehicle fitted with a Grappler device caught the SUV and brought it to a stop on the freeway shoulder. Dashcam footage shows the police vehicle moving close behind the SUV before deploying the equipment. Livonia officers took the driver into custody, and Hazel Park police arrested the driver.
The Grappler launches a heavy-duty nylon net from the pursuing vehicle. The net wraps around a rear tire, helping disable the vehicle and bring the pursuit to an end. The net is replaced after each use.
Livonia police said the device ended the chase without injuries or further property damage. The department described the incident as an example of how law enforcement technology can help protect the public and assist other agencies.
