Camp Verde Residents Rebuild After Flooding Destroys Homes and RVs
By November 4, residents of Camp Verde were beginning cleanup after Beaver Creek overflowed and floodwaters inundated homes and the Verde River RV Resort and Cottages. More than 100 homes flooded, with over a dozen completely destroyed. Recreational vehicles were overturned, and some residents were staying in the resort’s community center while looking for housing. Evacuation orders have been lifted, though affected areas remain restricted to residents and emergency personnel.
Heather and her husband, Caleb, joined others in rescuing two chickens, a pair of people, five dogs and three horses. Six horses remain missing. Heather said she reached the area at 7 a.m., as the flood peaked. The couple and three other people worked through dangerous currents and thick mud. One horse had a wounded leg and was stuck in mud; rescuers dug it out and treated a deep cut before moving it. Heather plans to keep searching for the missing horses.
At the resort, resident Ulric Beraid said floodwaters overturned and destroyed his motorhome, with his clothes and medicines still inside. Ruth Ann Wheatman said her husband was rescued from a truck before their trailer later tipped onto its side. Resident Randy Johnson described water reaching several feet up a rig.
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a statewide emergency on November 2, making $200,000 in relief assistance available. The Red Cross and churches are helping displaced residents, while neighbors are also providing support. A Camp Verde donation hub is distributing clothing, food and other essentials and is seeking blankets, children’s items, animal feed, warm meals and gift cards.
