Alabama’s No. 5 CFP Ranking Draws Backlash

Alabama was ranked No. 5 in the first College Football Playoff standings of the season despite having a 6-2 overall record and going 5-2 in conference play. The placement drew criticism, as did committee chair Hunter Yurachek’s defense of it during an ESPN interview with Rece Davis.

Yurachek pointed to Alabama’s road win over Kentucky, ranked sixth, and victories against South Carolina and Mississippi State. He said the committee had valued Alabama’s win over Mississippi State because the Bulldogs were unbeaten and at full strength when the teams met.

That reasoning drew sharp responses from fans and sports commentator Dave Portnoy. Some questioned the committee’s process and called for a different way to select playoff teams; others argued Alabama was benefiting from favoritism toward the team or the SEC.

The Bulldogs’ subsequent record became a particular focus of the criticism. Alabama beat Mississippi State 56-24 in early October, but Mississippi State was 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the SEC by November 4.

Alabama had lost twice in its previous three games: a close game against Georgia on October 10 and a 26-10 defeat to No. 13 Tennessee on October 17. Its next test is a November 7 visit to LSU, another team viewed as a potential playoff contender. That game could affect Alabama’s prospects, though the committee’s response to a possible third loss remains to be seen.
