What the First College Football Playoff Rankings Could Reveal
The first College Football Playoff rankings arrive on November 3, as the selection committee meets near Dallas to assess the national title field. The initial list will offer a glimpse of how members balance teams’ performances against the strength of their schedules and results against ranked opponents.
Several conference races will draw attention. Georgia is expected to lead the SEC, but the league’s other teams have produced uneven results. In the ACC, the placement of one-loss Wake Forest could shape expectations for the conference’s chances of earning multiple playoff spots. The Big 12 picture will hinge in part on Utah, BYU and Texas Tech, including how the committee weighs schedule strength.
Ohio State’s position will also be watched after a loss to USC and an injury to starting quarterback Julian Sayin. The Buckeyes face Oregon next, giving the committee more evidence to consider. Meanwhile, the Group of 6 race has become less clear after setbacks for several contenders, including James Madison, Memphis and Oregon State. The committee’s six ranking releases follow a set schedule, with the first landing on election night; the final rankings are due after conference championship games in December.
