Democrats Sweep Key Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware Races
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro won a second term, while Democrat Bob Harvie defeated Republican incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick in the state’s 1st Congressional District. Democrat Bob Brooks also flipped Pennsylvania’s 7th District, defeating Republican Ryan Mackenzie. Democrats Brendan Boyle, Chris Rabb, Madeleine Dean and Mary Scanlon won new House terms, while Cory Booker retained his New Jersey Senate seat and Democrats won House races across the state.
Democrats Turn Midterm Gains Into Control of Congress
Voters delivered Democrats a sweeping midterm victory, giving the party control of the House and Senate and a stronger hand in shaping the next two years of federal policymaking. The results also put Republicans on notice in districts they had held, including Pennsylvania’s 1st and 7th and New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro won a second term, and Democrat Bob Harvie unseated Republican Brian Fitzpatrick. Bob Brooks also flipped Pennsylvania’s 7th District. In New Jersey, Democrat Zack Mullock defeated Jeff Van Drew in a district Van Drew had won by 17 points two years earlier; Cory Booker kept his Senate seat. Democrats also won across Delaware, including Chris Coons and Sarah McBride.
The new majority will have more leverage in budget negotiations and can block Cabinet and judicial nominations. Republicans can still use the Senate filibuster to hold up some bills, and President Trump can reject legislation. But the election gives Democrats the ability to advance proposals reflecting their priorities and puts the burden on the governing parties to show voters results before 2028.
Democratic Gains Set Up Two Years of Washington Gridlock
Democrats’ wins across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware will give the party control of both chambers, but the results also bring a test: voters will expect the newly elected leaders to deliver. Some voters celebrated the change; others were disappointed or worried that Washington would struggle to get things done.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro won another term, while Democrats Bob Harvie and Bob Brooks flipped the state’s 1st and 7th House districts. New Jersey saw two Democratic House seat gains, including Zack Mullock’s defeat of Jeff Van Drew in the 2nd District, which Van Drew had carried by 17 points two years earlier. Cory Booker retained his Senate seat, and Democrats also won congressional races in Delaware.
Democrats will gain leverage over budgets and can prevent Cabinet appointments and judicial picks, while Republicans can still impede some Senate bills through the filibuster. President Trump will have to negotiate with a Democratic Congress on government funding, and can veto bills. Voters are watching practical concerns such as gas prices, while political experts say the new majority’s performance could shape the next swing of the political pendulum toward 2028.
