Altman Says Consumers Should Have Plenty of RAM
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman used X on November 4 to clarify remarks about the world’s limited supply of computer memory, saying he wants people to be able to install as much RAM as they choose. He briefly changed his profile name to “Ram Altman” during the exchange, then restored his usual name by November 4.
The exchange followed comments Altman made on the Cheeky Pint podcast, released on October 29. He said it was a poor use of scarce DRAM for personal computers to hold memory that sits idle much of the time, arguing that cloud facilities can put it to heavier use when running AI models.
Some listeners took the comments to mean that ordinary users ought to get less memory, leaving data centers with a greater share. Altman pushed back, saying he supports increasing memory production and wants people to have plenty of RAM. When a user asked why he wanted their memory, he replied that he wanted them to have lots and that more should be made.
Altman’s temporary name change followed a joke from an X user who posted an image of memory chips arranged as bait for a box trap. After Altman responded that he had laughed, another user asked him to adopt the “Ram Altman” name, and he agreed.
The dispute comes amid tight memory supplies as AI data centers buy large quantities of RAM, contributing to shortages and higher technology prices. Intel expects the shortage to continue through at least next year, while SK Hynix has said it could persist until 2030.
