Netflix Series Revisits Natalee Holloway’s Disappearance

The three-part series follows Beth Holloway from the moment she learned her 18-year-old daughter had not boarded a flight home after a graduation trip to Aruba. It includes new interviews with Beth, Natalee’s friends, investigators and Aruban officials, as well as accounts of how the case was ultimately resolved for Beth in 2023, after Joran van der Sloot admitted that he had killed Natalee.

Friends said Natalee departed a bar on May 30, 2005, riding in a vehicle alongside van der Sloot and siblings Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. They were not alarmed at the time, one friend explained, because ordinary cars could serve as taxis on the island. Beth went to van der Sloot’s home after learning he was with Natalee that night. His account was that he had left her at her hotel, but Beth said she believed he knew what had happened.

Van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers were arrested after investigators obtained hotel security footage that undermined his account. Police chief Gerold Dompig said van der Sloot gave investigators many changing versions of events. The brothers were released, and all three men were out of custody by September 3, 2005, with investigators unable to prove what happened. Natalee’s body was never found.

In 2010, van der Sloot offered Beth’s lawyer information about Natalee’s remains in exchange for $250,000. The FBI recorded the arrangement and established that his claim was false. In 2023, he was extradited to the United States and pleaded guilty to attempted extortion and wire fraud. Beth accepted the deal in exchange for answers, despite initially wanting him to remain imprisoned for life. The series also revisits the intense media attention and the frustration Aruban residents felt at portrayals of the island’s response.
