Georgia’s 14 House Seats Stay With Their Existing Parties
On November 3, voters in Georgia chose representatives in all 14 of the state’s U.S. House districts. The results left the partisan makeup of Georgia’s delegation unchanged, even as Democrats won enough seats nationally to secure a House majority.
Democratic incumbents Sanford Bishop, Hank Johnson, Nikema Williams and Lucy McBath won reelection in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th districts, respectively. Jasmine Clark won the 13th District.
Republican incumbents Rich McCormick and Brian Jack held the 7th and 3rd districts. Jim Kingston defeated Democrat Amanda Hollowell in the 1st District. The other winners were Andrew Clyde in the 9th, Austin Scott in the 8th, Clay Fuller in the 14th, Houston Gaines in the 10th, John Cowan in the 11th and Rick Allen in the 12th.
All 14 races were called between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning. The earliest call was for Clark in the 13th District at 7:21 p.m. Tuesday; the 1st District race was called at 12:14 a.m. Wednesday.
State election officials had projected more than 1 million Election Day votes statewide. Final statewide turnout totals and certified results for the districts had not yet been released.
Democrats Win House Majority, Georgia Seats Hold Steady
On November 3, Democrats won a House majority nationally, while Georgia’s 14-seat delegation kept its existing partisan balance. The state results show that the national shift did not translate into a change in Georgia’s congressional lineup.
Democratic incumbents Sanford Bishop, Hank Johnson, Nikema Williams and Lucy McBath held the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th districts. Jasmine Clark won the 13th District. Their victories preserved the Democratic seats in the delegation as voters across the country gave the party enough seats for a House majority.
Republican incumbents Rich McCormick and Brian Jack also held their districts, the 7th and 3rd. Jim Kingston defeated Democrat Amanda Hollowell in the 1st District. Andrew Clyde, Austin Scott, Clay Fuller, Houston Gaines, John Cowan and Rick Allen won the 9th, 8th, 14th, 10th, 11th and 12th districts, respectively.
All 14 races were called between Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning. The first call came at 7:21 p.m. Tuesday in the 13th District; the 1st District was called at 12:14 a.m. Wednesday. State officials had projected more than 1 million Election Day votes, but final statewide turnout totals and certified district results had not been released.
Georgia Holds Its House Delegation Despite National Democratic Gains
On November 3, Georgia voters returned the state’s existing partisan balance to the U.S. House, despite Democrats gaining enough seats nationwide to secure the chamber’s majority. All 14 Georgia races were called, and the delegation’s party makeup did not shift.
Republican incumbents Rich McCormick and Brian Jack won the 7th and 3rd districts. Jim Kingston defeated Democrat Amanda Hollowell in the 1st District. Andrew Clyde, Austin Scott, Clay Fuller, Houston Gaines, John Cowan and Rick Allen also won, in the 9th, 8th, 14th, 10th, 11th and 12th districts.
Democratic incumbents Sanford Bishop, Hank Johnson, Nikema Williams and Lucy McBath held the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th districts, while Jasmine Clark won the 13th. Those victories left Georgia’s delegation with the same partisan balance even as the national House changed hands.
Race calls came from 7:21 p.m. Tuesday, when the 13th District was called, through 12:14 a.m. Wednesday, when the 1st District was called. Election officials had projected more than 1 million Election Day votes statewide. Final turnout totals and certified district results had not yet been released.
