Andy Barr Wins Kentucky Senate Seat as McConnell Steps Aside

Andy Barr, a Republican congressman backed by President Donald Trump, won Kentucky’s U.S. Senate race on November 3, defeating Democrat Charles Booker for the seat being vacated by Mitch McConnell. The contest was decided on November 3.

With 85% of votes counted, Barr had 54.8%, or 754,215 votes, while Booker had 43.1%, or 592,272. Barr thanked Kentuckians on X, writing that it was an honor to serve as their next senator.

Barr has represented Kentucky in the House since 2013. Trump endorsed him in May and had also helped thin the Republican primary field by convincing Nate Morris to step aside for a government appointment.

McConnell, 84, has held the Senate seat since 1985 and is not seeking reelection. He has publicly clashed with Trump since the president returned to office. Barr had earlier worked as an intern for McConnell.

Booker, a progressive Democrat, previously lost a 2022 Senate race to Republican Rand Paul. Trump carried Kentucky by 31 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
