Booker Wins Reelection to New Jersey Senate Seat
On November 3, Democrat Cory Booker won reelection to the U.S. Senate in New Jersey, beating Republican Justin Murphy, independent Veronica Fernandez, and Joanne Kuniansky of the Socialist Workers Party. By the evening of November 3, with 80 percent of votes counted, Booker had more than 63 percent, compared with Murphy’s 34.4 percent.
Booker centered his campaign on the cost of living. His Keep Your Pay Act proposal would exempt up to $75,000 in household earnings from federal income tax for most filers and increase the child tax credit.
During his Senate tenure, Booker sponsored the First Step Act and helped obtain $6.8 billion in federal support for the Hudson Tunnel Project. Before entering the Senate, he served on the Newark City Council and as Newark’s mayor.
Booker has also sharply criticized President Donald Trump, accusing him of sowing doubt about elections and trying to rig the midterms. In a recent interview, Booker urged voters to turn out in large numbers, saying that would make it harder to rig the election.
Booker’s Reelection Keeps a Cost-of-Living Advocate in the Senate
On November 3, New Jersey voters reelected Democrat Cory Booker to the U.S. Senate. By the evening of November 3, with 80 percent of votes counted, Booker held more than 63 percent, while Republican Justin Murphy had 34.4 percent. Joanne Kuniansky of the Socialist Workers Party and independent Veronica Fernandez also ran.
Booker put household costs at the center of his campaign. His Keep Your Pay Act would exempt as much as $75,000 in household earnings from federal income tax for most filers and enlarge the child tax credit—a direct appeal to families facing the cost-of-living debate.
His record also includes sponsoring the First Step Act and helping obtain $6.8 billion in federal support for the Hudson Tunnel Project. He previously served on Newark’s City Council and as the city’s mayor.
Booker has warned that President Donald Trump is undermining confidence in elections and accused him of trying to rig the midterms. His call for a large voter turnout framed the stakes as protecting the election process. Booker’s win returns that message, and his economic proposals, to the Senate with him.
Booker Wins Another Term After Focusing on Tax Relief
On November 3, Democratic Sen. Cory Booker won reelection in New Jersey, defeating Republican Justin Murphy. By the evening of November 3, with 80 percent of votes counted, Booker had more than 63 percent to Murphy’s 34.4 percent. Joanne Kuniansky of the Socialist Workers Party and independent Veronica Fernandez were also on the ballot.
Booker’s central economic pitch was the Keep Your Pay Act. It would exempt up to $75,000 of household earnings from federal income tax for most filers and increase the child tax credit, putting tax relief at the heart of his campaign.
Booker also pointed to his record sponsoring the First Step Act and helping obtain $6.8 billion in federal support for the Hudson Tunnel Project. His prior public service includes the Newark City Council and the city’s mayor’s office.
At the same time, Booker made President Donald Trump a target, accusing him of sowing doubt about elections and seeking to rig the midterms. The charge was part of Booker’s case for high voter turnout. His reelection gives him another Senate term after a campaign that paired a tax-cut proposal with an aggressive warning about Trump.
