Scarborough Criticizes McAfee’s Role on College GameDay
Scarborough used a Morning Joe discussion on November 3 to argue that McAfee’s presence was overshadowing other longtime College GameDay commentators. He praised Rece Davis, Nick Saban, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, while saying ESPN was giving McAfee too much airtime and that the shift was disappointing for viewers.
Co-host Willie Geist said the program had changed since McAfee joined its cast full-time in 2022. Geist described McAfee as its de facto lead and said the show now felt more centered on him, though he added that its other contributors remained a strength.
Scarborough also brought up McAfee’s response to a student video before GameDay’s October 24 broadcast from the University of Utah. McAfee said he felt uncomfortable after seeing the video, which appeared on the university’s official social media account. The university later apologized, saying it had hoped for a playful connection with viewers but had failed to achieve that.
The Utah broadcast followed a GameDay visit to BYU in Provo the previous week. McAfee later wrote on X that people had threatened to kill him, and some online communications also referred to his wife and children. He said he was trying his best, acknowledged that not everyone would agree with him, and described sports as a way to bring people together.
Scarborough’s remarks added to debate over McAfee’s role on the show and how much attention it should give its outspoken personality.
