Cinemark and Regal Decline Imax Screenings for Cliff Booth
Cinemark and Regal have decided not to screen The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth on their Imax screens. The Netflix film, starring Brad Pitt and directed by David Fincher from a script by Quentin Tarantino, is set to open in theaters on November 25, 2026, before moving to streaming about two weeks later. It will play at AMC and some independent theaters.
Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble said the company weighs bookings individually, but considers how decisions may affect the industry over time. He said the proposed release schedule was not beneficial to theaters or the broader theatrical business. Regal said its premium screens are valuable and that shorter exclusive runs affect its decisions about how to use them.
Cinemark intends to continue showing the upcoming Hunger Games installment, Sunrise on the Reaping, on Imax displays throughout Thanksgiving. Gamble cited strong advance ticket sales for the film, which opens immediately before the Cliff Booth release.
Gamble said Netflix has announced six films for theatrical release through November 2027, with marketing and public box-office reporting, and called its increased engagement encouraging. He said the company’s approach would need to be assessed as those releases take place. He also pointed to Amazon’s plans for about 15 theatrical releases a year and said Cinemark’s discussions with Apple suggested it might expand its theatrical activity.
Cinemark reported third-quarter revenue of $1.05 billion, up from $857.5 million in the same quarter of 2025. Gamble said he expects theatrical windows to lengthen, citing minimum commitments of 45 days and runs of more than 60 days for some major films.
