Regal and Cinemark Pass on Netflix’s Cliff Booth Release

Netflix’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is scheduled to open in Imax theaters on November 25, but Regal and Cinemark will not book it. AMC plans to screen the film, as do independent cinemas, giving it more than 500 screens worldwide, including some outside the United States.

The movie, starring Brad Pitt and directed by David Fincher, will have a two-week theatrical run before arriving on Netflix on December 23. Regal has about 100 Imax locations and Cinemark around 20, while AMC has roughly 200 in the United States.

The release falls shortly after The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens on November 20. The film’s holiday-season run is expected to take up many cinema screens, and theaters would need to allocate some Imax space to Cliff Booth. Its relatively brief period in theaters before streaming is another factor in the booking decision.

Netflix has announced a number of other films for cinema screenings, among them Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which is planned for a run of nearly 50 days before streaming. The company has also begun reporting box-office figures for some cinema releases. Its recent La Bola Negra opening earned more than $277,000 at four theaters.
