Bill Hader Voices the Cat in a New Animated Adventure

Published on November 3, 2026.

Bill Hader voices the Cat in the Hat in a feature-length animated film that expands on the story of the mischievous visitor. Directed and written by Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni, the movie follows the Cat as he tries to lift the spirits of Gabby and Sebastian after their family moves to a new town.

The Cat works for an organization devoted to imagination and inspiration. His boss, Mr. Hoogeboom, warns him that he could lose his job if he fails his assignment. The Cat has support from his friend Sherri, but must also contend with a self-important intern. Once at the children’s home, he leads them into a string of fantastical adventures involving monsters, musical instruments and a crowd of Things.

The voice cast includes Quinta Brunson as Sherri, Giancarlo Esposito as Mr. Hoogeboom, and America Ferrera as the children’s mother. Matt Berry voices Waffles, the family’s goldfish, while Bowen Yang and Paula Pell also appear. The film is rated PG.

The adaptation’s frenzied humor and visual variety have been seen as part of its appeal, though its crowded plot and relentless pace may overwhelm some viewers. One extended, quiet gag involving Waffles offers a contrast to the surrounding chaos. Assessments also differ on whether the film recovers the warmth and charm of the original book.

The film is scheduled for release in theaters on November 6, 2026.
