Couple Drowns in Inflatable Kayak on Salt River

A married couple drowned on October 31 while floating in an inflatable kayak on the lower Salt River in Maricopa County, Arizona. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office received a call for help shortly after 1:30 p.m., after a witness heard a man call out that his wife was unable to swim as they traveled downstream.

Investigators said the woman went underwater, followed by the man. Deputies found the woman’s body at about 2:10 p.m. Authorities located her husband’s body farther upriver at approximately 3 p.m.

Officials named the couple as Cindy Bowers, 68, and Anthony Beringer, 59. They were aboard a single kayak, without life jackets. Their deaths remain under investigation.
