Ypsilanti Township Apartment Fire Leaves 15 Without Housing

Firefighters were called to the three-story building at 120 South Hewitt Road at about 6:20 a.m. on November 3. Flames spread from the first floor to the upper floors, and responders received reports that residents might be trapped inside. The fire was contained, but the building was destroyed.

Fifteen residents were left without housing. One person had a smoke-related medical issue; reports said the person either received treatment for minor smoke inhalation or declined treatment at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Preliminary information indicates the fire began on the first floor, possibly near a balcony. Investigators have not yet determined what started the blaze. The Red Cross is working with the township to arrange emergency housing and provide immediate needs assistance.

Fire departments from Ypsilanti, Superior and Pittsfield townships assisted or provided backup to the township fire department.
