Eric Dane Described Months of Uncertainty Before ALS Diagnosis

Dane wrote that his medical search began after he gradually lost the use of his right hand. He first visited a hand specialist, then another specialist and a neurologist, who suspected neuropathy but could not determine the cause of his symptoms.

After examinations and tests, including an electromyography test, doctors settled on multifocal motor neuropathy, a rare autoimmune condition that causes severe muscle weakness. Dane wrote that treatment for the condition was considered highly effective, but he did not improve. His medical team became concerned, and his primary care doctor told him they were considering ALS but needed more time.

Frustrated by the uncertainty, Dane underwent further tests, including a lumbar puncture and brain scans. He received an ALS diagnosis nine months later in 2024. In his memoir, he described the diagnosis as devastating.

Dane recalled sharing the news with his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia. He wrote that the moment brought intense grief for both him and Gayheart. Dane went public with his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 and died on February 19, 2026, at 53. Gayheart said last month that she would protect and care for their daughters.
