One-Eyed Dog Rescued After Weeks on the Streets of San Francisco

Anchovy Jack, a recently adopted dog who had his right eye removed and was neutered shortly before escaping, spent weeks roaming San Francisco. The small, tan dog had previously lived on the streets and proved difficult for Animal Care and Control officers to approach. He was seen in several neighborhoods, including the Sunset, Richmond and Marina districts, as well as the Presidio and Golden Gate Park.

Jack was frightened and able to run quickly and leap over fences. Residents were urged not to chase or try to catch him, since pursuit could send him into traffic or cause him to flee again. People were asked to share sightings and contact emergency dispatch if he was confined or in immediate danger.

After repeated capture attempts failed, the shelter enlisted Susan Packer, who specializes in finding lost pets around the Bay Area and operates K9Reunite. Packer and volunteers tracked Jack from a distance, while officers relayed sightings shared with the shelter. Once he began staying in a smaller area, Packer set a humane trap and waited nearby for several days and nights. Jack eventually entered the trap, and Packer took him to the shelter.

Veterinarians examined him, and he was eating, drinking and resting comfortably. He will not return to the San Francisco home he escaped from. He needs a home suited to his high activity needs, but he will first need a foster placement with a specialized rescue group to rest before moving on to another home.
