Oak Park Man Charged in Madison Heights Halloween Store Shooting
Published November 2, 2026
John Lashawn Benson, 21, of Oak Park, is charged with first-degree murder and possessing a firearm during a felony in the shooting of Anthony Thompson, 21, of Detroit, at a Spirit Halloween store in Madison Heights. Police said the men encountered each other near the store’s entrance on John R. Road around 2 p.m. on October 30 and argued before Benson allegedly fired at Thompson multiple times.
Emergency responders brought Thompson to medical care, but he did not survive. No bystanders were injured. Police said investigators found a 9mm pistol at the location. Benson remained there and was taken into custody; police said Thompson’s family members assaulted him during the arrest. He was treated at a hospital for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Benson was arraigned on November 2, and the court ordered that he remain in custody. His next court appearance is set for November 18. The investigation is ongoing.
Benson’s wife has said he fired in self-defense, claiming Thompson confronted him and reached toward his pocket as the family left the store. She said Benson had a concealed pistol license. Police have not confirmed those details.
A Spirit Halloween spokesperson said the Madison Heights store would stay closed through the end of the season.
