Netflix Sets Fall 2027 Release for Joel Coen’s Jack of Spades

Set in the Scottish Highlands during the 1880s, Jack of Spades is a mystery about intrigue and betrayal. The film draws on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 book The Alien: A Story of Middle Age. Netflix will release it in theaters in fall 2027 before adding it to the streaming service, and is positioning the project as a major awards prospect for the following season.

Patsy Ferran and Josh O’Connor lead the cast, with Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville also starring. Joel Coen directed and developed the screenplay with his brother Ethan Coen, Eleanor Catton and Conor McPherson.

Coen produces alongside Frances McDormand and Robert Graf. Steven Rales produces for Indian Paintbrush, while Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin produce for Blueprint Pictures; Donald MacKinnon is an executive producer. Cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel and composer Carter Burwell are among Coen’s returning creative collaborators.

The acquisition reunites Coen with Netflix after the 2018 anthology film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, which received three Oscar nominations. A festival debut is considered likely, and the planned theatrical window puts Jack of Spades in place for Netflix’s 2028 awards-season campaign.
