Vrabel’s Challenge Flag Helps Spark Patriots’ Comeback
The Patriots trailed 13-3 midway through the third quarter when quarterback Drake Maye found wide receiver Kyle Williams deep. Williams crossed the goal line, but officials initially ruled the catch incomplete after the ball came loose. Coach Mike Vrabel threw his red challenge flag onto the field, and the review overturned the call, confirming the touchdown.
The score shifted the momentum in New England’s favor. Williams said the team needed a play to change the game, while Vrabel said he was more confident in the touchdown than the officials had been on the initial ruling. Williams said the play had been in the team’s plans for weeks and that Miami’s defensive setup gave them the opening they wanted.
New England added two more touchdowns to complete the 24-19 comeback. Maye finished with 199 passing yards after throwing for 41 in the first half. DeMario Douglas, who had no catches before halftime, made three catches for 76 yards, including a 48-yard scoring play. Williams and Douglas each caught a scoring pass of more than 40 yards.
The Patriots were missing several receivers, and tight end Hunter Henry left in the second quarter with a foot injury. Receiver Mack Hollins could be eligible to return for next Sunday’s home game against Green Bay; Romeo Doubs could return as soon as the November 29 game against the Chargers. New England’s schedule also includes a game against Detroit in Munich after the Packers matchup.
