Maye’s three touchdowns lift Patriots past Dolphins
The Patriots overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Dolphins 24-19 on November 1 in Miami Gardens, Florida. Drake Maye threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, helping New England improve to 5-3. Miami fell to 1-6 after letting its halftime lead slip away.
Maye completed 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards. New England’s offense struggled before the break, but Maye connected with Kyle Williams on a 43-yard touchdown in the third quarter to bring the Patriots within three. The score was initially ruled incomplete, then changed after New England coach Mike Vrabel challenged the call.
Maye put the Patriots ahead with a two-yard rushing touchdown late in the third. Early in the fourth, DeMario Douglas caught a 48-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead. New England outscored Miami 21-0 after halftime before the Dolphins mounted a late push.
Miami quarterback Malik Willis threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to first-year receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. with two minutes left in the game. The Dolphins failed on a two-point attempt, and Rhamondre Stevenson recovered their onside kick to secure possession for New England. Willis finished with 211 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and was sacked five times.
The Patriots played without several injured or unavailable offensive starters, and tight end Hunter Henry left with a foot injury. New England is due to host Green Bay next Sunday; Miami is scheduled to host Detroit.
