Five Shot and Two Pedestrians Hurt in East Lansing Overnight Incidents

East Lansing police are investigating four separate incidents near Michigan State University: two shootings and two crashes involving pedestrians. The incidents occurred overnight from Halloween into Sunday, November 1, as firefighters responded to 91 calls over a 24-hour period, 75 of them overnight.

Three people were shot after midnight near M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Two were in stable condition, while the condition of the third was unknown. In a separate shooting near Stoddard Street and Frye Avenue, two people were wounded and both were reported in stable condition. Police recovered multiple firearms at the second scene and took several people into custody. Investigators had not determined whether the recovered guns were used in the shooting.

In the first pedestrian crash, near Abbot Road and Library Lane, the injured person was initially in critical condition, then underwent surgery and was listed as stable. The driver was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. A second pedestrian was hit near Grand River Avenue and Gunson Street and was reported in stable condition; that driver was also arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. A firearm was recovered from the second driver’s vehicle.

Police Chief Jennifer Brown said officers were responding to each incident as the next occurred. She said there was no known threat to the community and thanked agencies that provided mutual aid, including Michigan State Police and Michigan State University police. Police are continuing their investigations.
