Weekend Shootings Strike Five College Communities

Police in five college communities were investigating weekend shootings that left three people dead and at least 29 injured. Incidents were reported near universities in Indiana, Delaware, Illinois and Colorado, as well as near a football game in Alabama. The shootings occurred at crowded gatherings or parties, according to authorities and university statements.

In Bloomington, Indiana, seven people were hospitalized after gunfire near Indiana University’s homecoming. Police said officers took a man seen running with a firearm into custody and recovered a gun and shell casings. They have not determined whether he fired. In Newark, Delaware, at least six people were reportedly hospitalized after a Saturday-night shooting on Main Street; the University of Delaware said Newark police are leading the investigation.

Near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, the Magic City Classic was followed by one death and eight injuries. One injured person was in critical condition, while seven others were stable. A person was detained for questioning, and officers secured multiple weapons. Nearly 70,000 fans watched Alabama A&M face Alabama State, which Alabama A&M won 31-28.

In Bloomington, Illinois, gunfire injured eight people close to Illinois Wesleyan University. A 19-year-old woman died at the scene, and another woman remained in critical condition. Federal alcohol, tobacco and firearms agents are assisting the investigation.

In Boulder, Colorado, two 19-year-old University of Colorado Boulder students were shot at a home on University Hill. One died at a hospital and the other was in critical condition. Police had responded to a noise complaint at the home earlier Saturday and cited residents over a nuisance party. The city said the county coroner would release the deceased student’s identity.
