Inde Navarrette Jokes About Shane Gillis’ Gym Comment on SNL

Navarrette, 25, opened her first SNL monologue by talking about her role in the horror film Obsession. She said she was unlike her character, Nikki, and pointed to her boyfriend, Nick Aiello, who appeared on camera tied to a chair in the audience.

The actress then discussed her upcoming role as Rogue in Marvel’s X-Men reboot. Saying she had been working out to get in shape for the part, she joked that she put on “my little whore outfit” each morning before going to the gym. The line drew laughter and applause.

The joke alluded to Gillis’ October 10 SNL monologue, in which he criticized women’s gym outfits and used the same term. His remarks drew backlash, including criticism from actor Dan Levy and two former Saturday Night Live performers, Ego Nwodim and Cecily Strong.

The Halloween broadcast opened with Tom Hanks returning as David S. Pumpkins in a cold open that also featured a portrayal of Donald Trump. Gracie Abrams appeared as musical guest. Navarrette is set to star as Rogue in the upcoming X-Men film.
