Fire Damages Senatobia Police Headquarters Under Federal Investigation

Firefighters were called to the Senatobia Police Department headquarters at 4:58 a.m. on October 31 after smoke was reported inside. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze. The building was damaged, but authorities have not released details about the extent of the damage or what started the fire. The department said it remained operational, with police services continuing without interruption.

Investigators from the federal bureau responsible for alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives, along with local authorities, are looking into the matter. Senatobia police interim chief LaMorris Hampton said the department was taking the incident seriously and that some information could not yet be released because the investigation was ongoing. Authorities have not said whether the fire was deliberately set.

The department has faced anger in the community of about 8,000 since an officer fatally shot 1-year-old Kohen Wiley in June while responding to a reported shoplifting incident at a Walmart. Wiley’s mother was unharmed and her friend was seriously injured. Both women denied stealing, and neither has been charged. The officer resigned earlier in October after the state attorney general’s office concluded his use of force was justified and cleared him of criminal wrongdoing.

Reports accusing him of using racist language in private texts preceded the police chief’s September firing. Senatobia is about 40 miles south of Memphis.
