Ja Morant Out at Least Four Weeks With Hamstring Strain

Morant played 23 minutes in Portland’s 124-103 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday, then left with a left hamstring injury and did not return. It was his first game against Memphis since joining Portland in an offseason trade. He recorded 14 points and also had three assists and two rebounds.

The Trail Blazers said imaging showed a Grade 2 strain and that Morant is due for another evaluation after four weeks. The timetable leaves him set to miss much of November, though the team has not given a return date.

Portland coach Micah Nori said after the game that Morant felt a twinge. Nori explained that he was trying to get Morant out, but the team’s defensive runs meant the guard remained in for several more possessions before a stoppage allowed him to leave.

The Blazers are expected to turn to veteran guard Jrue Holiday in the starting lineup. Scoot Henderson could also take on a larger role, while Damian Lillard may see increased responsibility. Portland has used all three guards regularly during its opening games.

Thursday’s defeat was Portland’s first of the season after three wins. The team is scheduled to play the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City on Friday.
