Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Celebrate 30 Years at Edinburgh Festival

On October 30, 2026, the Edinburgh International Film Festival announced plans to celebrate three decades since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai premiered with a special screening at its 2028 edition. Director Karan Johar, who made his directorial debut with the 1998 film, has accepted an invitation to attend. Other guests are also expected, though the festival has not announced the event’s date or its 2028 program schedule.

The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, a widower whose daughter helps bring him back together with Anjali, played by Kajol. Rani Mukerji plays Tina, whom Rahul married, while Salman Khan appears as Anjali’s fiancé. The production filmed at Scottish sites such as Inchmahome Priory, Eilean Donan Castle, Glen Coe and Tantallon Castle. No earlier large-scale Indian film had shot so much of its production in Scotland, and the country’s scenery became a notable part of the movie.

The invitation came during a Mumbai meeting between Johar, Scotland’s head of government John Swinney and David Smith, Screen Scotland’s interim executive director. Their discussions covered potential Scottish-Indian cooperation in film and television, such as filming, joint productions, nurturing talent and cultural exchange. Swinney said Scotland could be a creative partner for Indian productions.

The festival’s 80th edition is scheduled for August 12–18, 2027, with submissions opening in January. The 2028 anniversary celebration will be part of its 81st edition. EIFF returned in 2024 under CEO and festival director Paul Ridd and producer Emma Boa, and is backed by Screen Scotland.
