Bichette Exercises $42 Million Option to Stay With Mets
Bo Bichette will return to the New York Mets in 2027 after exercising his $42 million player option on October 29. The decision gives the team continuity at third base and leaves Bichette another chance to opt out after next season, under the terms of his contract, which also includes a $42 million option for 2028.
The 28-year-old signed a three-year, $126 million deal with New York before the 2026 season. His first year with the Mets was uneven: he finished with a .260/.312/.390 batting line and 18 home runs, after a slow start at the plate.
Bichette hit .210/.264/.271 through May 16, then batted .280/.331/.438 over the rest of the season. He was also adjusting to third base after playing shortstop with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Mets used him at shortstop for a stretch when Francisco Lindor was injured, before Bichette returned to third.
His option exercise means the Mets do not need to find a replacement at third this offseason. The team finished 2026 with a 74-88 record and also faces decisions at first base and in its pitching staff. Marcus Semien is under contract at second base, though a possible infield change has been discussed.
A stronger season could help Bichette restore his value before another opportunity to test free agency. The Mets will also look for more production from a lineup that includes Lindor and Juan Soto, both of whom missed significant time in 2026.
