Highland Park Methodist Split Deepens as Both Sides Plan Services

On October 29, the split over Highland Park United Methodist Church escalated after the congregation voted to leave the United Methodist Church. More than 90% of the 4,775 votes supported separation. The congregation’s church has since taken the name Highland Park Methodist Church and plans to complete its departure by December 1.

The Texas Horizon Conference disputes the vote’s validity, saying it did not comply with denomination rules. Bishop Ruben Saenz has appointed Reverend Andy Lewis to lead the congregation that remains under the conference and removed senior minister Matt Tuggle and other former church leaders.

Both groups plan to hold services on Sunday. Highland Park Methodist Church says it will worship at its regular location on Hillcrest Road and Mockingbird Lane with the same clergy. The congregation led by Lewis is scheduled to meet at University Park United Methodist Church.

The separation follows a legal dispute and a breakdown in trust between church leaders and the denomination. Saenz has expressed hope for reconciliation, while leaders of Highland Park Methodist say they are confident in their legal position.

A non-jury trial between the parties is scheduled for October 2027.
