Rivian’s R2 Becomes Its Best-Selling Vehicle

Rivian’s R2 SUV became the company’s leading model in unit sales during the third quarter, overtaking the R1T, R1S and electric delivery van. The automaker did not disclose how many R2s it delivered, but said the model accounted for much of the increase in deliveries from the previous quarter.

Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles and produced 19,751 during the quarter. Deliveries were up about 45% from a year earlier, while production rose 85%. A second shift at the company’s Normal, Illinois, factory helped boost output. The R2 launched in June.

The company raised the lower end of its annual delivery forecast from 65,000 to 67,000 vehicles, its second guidance increase this year. Rivian is now positioned to exceed the roughly 50,000 annual deliveries it had struggled to surpass over the previous three years.

Third-quarter revenue reached $2.15 billion, up 38% from a year earlier, while Rivian recorded a net loss of $913 million, narrower than its $1.2 billion loss in the same quarter of 2025. Automotive gross profit improved by $152 million year over year, though the automotive business still recorded an $80 million gross loss.

Software and services generated $605 million in revenue and $256 million in gross profit. Much of that income came from technology licensing to Volkswagen and customer subscriptions. Rivian expects lower-priced R2 versions to arrive from late 2026 through 2027, potentially broadening the SUV’s reach as production expands.
