Train crash leads to postponement of 24 Copa del Rey games
The Spanish soccer federation postponed all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for October 28, citing respect and solidarity for those affected by the deadly train crash in the province of Toledo, south of Madrid. The collision killed dozens and left about 80 people injured, while at least one tally put the death toll above 60.
A high-speed train struck the rear of another train that had stopped on the tracks. The federation said the Spanish soccer community was united in grief and available to help authorities assist victims.
Clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid shared condolences and messages of support for victims’ families and those injured. The three clubs enter the tournament at the round of 32, rather than the first round.
Five top-flight teams—Betis, Celta of Vigo, Valencia, Alaves and Levante—were scheduled to play on October 28. Matches planned for October 29 remain scheduled, and games were played on October 27. The Spanish league had not announced changes to fixtures for October 31 and November 1. The federation said it would provide a revised tournament schedule and new match times.
