Vanderbilt Leads Mississippi State 16-0 at Halftime

Vanderbilt took a 16-0 lead into halftime on the road against Mississippi State, putting itself within reach of ending a five-game losing streak. The game marked the Commodores’ first outing after a bye week and their largest lead of more than 10 points since beating Delaware in Week 2.

The defense held Mississippi State to 71 total yards and one third-down conversion. Vanderbilt forced four straight three-and-outs, and cornerback Jordan Matthews intercepted a pass from former Commodores quarterback AJ Swann. Swann completed seven of 15 passes for 45 yards.

Brock Taylor opened the scoring with a 38-yard field goal late in the first quarter. In the second, Vanderbilt capped a 13-play, 87-yard drive with a rushing touchdown by Sedrick Alexander. Taylor added two more field goals before halftime.

Vanderbilt had 181 yards of offense and nearly 22 minutes of possession. Freshman quarterback Jared Curtis completed 10 of 14 passes for 102 yards, while the team gained 79 yards on 29 carries. That was a step forward after Vanderbilt managed 15 rushing yards against Kentucky two weeks earlier, though coach Clark Lea has emphasized efficiency and physicality in the run game rather than a particular carry total.

The Commodores had two penalties for 10 yards through two quarters. They had 30 minutes remaining to protect the lead and end their losing streak.
