Alanis Morissette Says She Is Pansexual
Alanis Morissette disclosed her sexuality during a conversation with the hosts of the Handsome podcast, released on November 3. The singer said she is pansexual while responding to a question from co-host Fortune Feimster about whether painful experiences with men had ever made her want to be a lesbian. Co-host Tig Notaro asked if Morissette meant it, and Morissette confirmed that she did. Mae Martin, the podcast’s third co-host, also said they are pansexual.
Pansexuality refers to attraction that is not limited by a person’s gender identity or sex. Morissette joked with the hosts that she preferred to save the disclosure for the end of the episode, after they teased that she could have mentioned it at the start.
The singer has previously spoken publicly about relationships and their influence on her life and music. In a September appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she recalled proposing a same-sex kiss between her character and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw during Morissette’s guest appearance on Sex and the City. She described the kiss as pleasant and said the idea came from her.
Morissette rose to prominence with her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, later adapted as a Broadway musical. She became a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year and is performing a Los Angeles residency called Butterfly with a Machete, which combines music and storytelling.
