Two Teams Put Layups Into the Wrong Basket
Two women’s college basketball games on November 6 featured a rare mistake: a player on each team put the ball through her own side’s basket, awarding points to the opponent. Northwestern State’s Karma Wynn and New Mexico State’s Emma Christiana were involved in the mix-ups.
In the first quarter against Arkansas, Wynn received a bounce pass beneath Northwestern State’s basket and made a layup into the wrong hoop. The points put the Lady Demons six behind. Arkansas went on to win 89-59.
About an hour later, New Mexico State was trailing Southern Utah 61-60 with roughly 20 seconds left when Christiana stole an inbounds pass and drove toward the wrong end of the court. Her layup gave Southern Utah a three-point lead. The broadcast announcer initially called it as if the Aggies had taken the lead, and the scoreboard also appeared to show New Mexico State ahead.
The Aggies recovered despite the mistake. Freshman Stacy Chovino scored the game’s final two baskets, including the winning layup with two seconds remaining, to secure a 64-63 New Mexico State victory.
