Mets Re-Sign Robert Stock to One-Year Major League Deal

Stock, who turns 37 later this month, gives the Mets another option as they look to add depth to a pitching staff that struggled last season. He made seven starts and one relief appearance for New York, finishing with a 5.93 ERA across 30⅓ innings.

His return followed a difficult recovery. Stock had thoracic outlet surgery in March, then pitched in eight minor league games during June and July as he worked back to major league form. He joined the Mets during the second half of the season, but finger numbness sent him to the injured list in mid-September and ended his campaign.

Stock’s outings varied sharply. In four of his starts, he gave up no more than one run; in the other three, he allowed 18 earned runs over 11 innings. His best appearance came on August 31, when he threw 5⅓ scoreless innings, allowed five hits and struck out four against Tampa Bay.

The Mets may use Stock as a long reliever, though his past work also offers starting depth. A veteran who has pitched in several leagues and countries, he is known for making extensive use of baseball data and technology. He said last season that he had shown he merited consideration as a major league pitcher and had many areas he wanted to improve.
